Home For The Holidaze

I am back in my childhood bedroom for the next week or so… and my mother won’t let me out of her sight.

I love her but, woof.

Well – at least I can turn to silly holiday internet cheer!

The Eye Has To Travel

I was thrilled to find this documentary on Netflix – I missed it in theaters awhile ago.

Diana Vreeland was such a magnificent creature. And full of memorable bon mots:

“There’s only one thing in life, and that’s the continual renewal of inspiration.”

“I think when you’re young you should be a lot with yourself and your sufferings. Then one day you get out where the sun shines and the rain rains and the snow snows and it all comes together.”

“When I arrived in America, I had these very dark red nails which some people objected to, but then some people object to absolutely everything.”

“To be contented—that’s for the cows.”*

“You know the greatest thing is passion, without it what have you got? I mean if you love someone you can love them as much as you can love them but if it isn’t a passion, it isn’t burning, it isn’t on fire, you haven’t lived.”

AGREED.

*Hee hee – not sure why but I find this one particularly amusing.

Love, Marilyn

I will always love Marilyn Monroe. She was so heartbreakingly sensitive and complex – much more so than she ever got credit for. A real artist.

The HBO documentary Love, Marilyn is not great. The actors interpreting her writing are a bit… awkward. But the insights from her own words are magnificent (you can buy the book/source material here):

oh damn i wish that i were dead absolutely nonexistent gone away from here from everywhere but how would i do it? there is always bridges- the brooklyn bridge- but i love that bridge(everything is beautiful from there and the air is so clean) walking it seems peaceful even with all the cars going crazy underneath. so it would have to be some other bridge an ugly one with no view- except i like in particular all bridges- there’s something about them and besides i’ve never seen an ugly bridge

Isn’t that so sad and beautiful?
